It was in 1930 that our founder, the late Sri. K. S. Gangadhara Iyer established a company in his name. Manufacturing and Exporting coir products of various items. The company grew steadily over the years, to become a major name in the coir industry. The company today stands poised on the verge of greater growth in the new millennium, under the guidance of its third generation of management and have been recognised as an Export House by the Govt. of India.
Coir is the fibre extracted from the outer husks of coconuts. When coconuts are harvested, the hard fibrous outer husks is collected for weaving coir. The outer husks are tied in nets or formed into rafts and then weighted down to sink into the lagoons of coastal Kerala. The husks remain submerged in the lagoons for up to 9 months, when various natural processes soften and lighten the husks. This process is called "retting".
The husks are then removed from the water and beaten with wooden mallets to separate the coir fibre from the outer skin. After drying in the sun, the fibre is spun on spinning wheels. The spun fibre is then twisted into yarn and supplied to the weavers
Weaving is done both on traditional handlooms and automatic powerlooms. Sometimes, even the extraction of fibre and its treatments are done by mechanical and chemical process to save time and effort.
Coir is a 100% natural fibre and so is totally bio-degradable. Coir mats and matting are very durable and can be naturally dyed or stenciled with enamel paints to achieve almost any required print or design. They are good sound and heat insulators, moth proof and resistant to rot and fungi. They are very easy to install and maintain. The natural elegance and versatile of coir are reasons for its growing popularity around the world.
Coir is woven into various kinds of Door Mats, Mattings, Rugs and Geotextiles. Fibre mats however are not made from yarn, but from tuffs of fibre, inserted tightly into wooven base.
Coir products can be given a rubber or latex backing for additional strength and grip.
